In celebration of Women’s History Month, the USC Safe Communities Institute (SCI) hosted the “Women Leading the Way” panel—an inspiring conversation spotlighting groundbreaking women in public safety. The panel featured thought leaders who have not only broken barriers in their respective fields but continue to advocate for equity and excellence in public service.
Panelists included:
- Undersheriff April Tardy, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department
- Chief Rachel Johnson, Manhattan Beach Police Department
- Vice President Rasha Gerges Shields, Los Angeles Police Commission
The discussion was moderated by Jessie Redd, Managing Director of the Safe Communities Institute.
Throughout the event, panelists reflected on their early careers, shared pivotal career moments, and offered insights into navigating leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated professions. They discussed the importance of mentorship, perseverance, and collaboration in achieving systemic change and creating more pathways for women to thrive in public safety.
SCI is honored to provide a platform where leaders can share their voices, connect with future changemakers, and advance a shared vision of safer, more equitable communities for all.
