Women’s History Month: Honoring Ozie Gonzaque

The Safe Communities Institute had the honor of celebrating Ozie Gonzaque for Women’s History Month! We explored her book, “To Protect and Serve: The Volunteer World of Ozie Bell Gonzaque” and learned first hand about her pivotal role in bridging the gap between the community and law enforcement. One of her initial endeavors was to organize a meeting with former LAPD Chief, William H. Parker, despite his strained relationship with the African American community. With determination, Mrs. Gonzaque set aside personal sentiments and urged Parker to “change the tone” within the LAPD. This marked the beginning of an unexpected but enduring friendship between them. Over time, she cultivated relationships with other influential leaders, initiating the healing process between law enforcement and the African American community. Remarkably, her longstanding relationship with the LAPD continues to thrive to this day.
