Violence Prevention Book Event – ‘Bleeding Out’
September 20, 2019 @ 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Event Navigation
Harvard scholar and former Obama Administration official Thomas Abt shows in his book, Bleeding Out, that the tools necessary to stem urban violence are already known. He will speak about this in an upcoming book talk, panel discussion and networking event.
Coupling the latest social science with firsthand experience as a crime-fighter, Abt proposes a relentless focus on violence itself (rather than drugs, gangs or guns). Because violence is “sticky,” clustering among small groups of people and places, it can be predicted and prevented using a series of smart-on-crime strategies. Bringing these strategies together, Abt offers a cost-effective plan to reduce homicides in selected cities by over 50 percent in eight years, saving more than 12,000 lives nationally.
Joining Abt for a panel discussion will be:
- Andrea Welsing Director, Injury and Violence Prevention Program-L.A. County Department of Public Health
- Tchaka Shepherd, MD, Trauma Medical Director-St. Francis Medical Center
- Gilbert Salinas Chief Clinical Officer at L.A. County Department of Health Services, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center
