SCI hosts Dr. Aquil Basheer

The Safe Communities Institute had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Aquil Basheer, founder and executive director of the Brotherhood Unified for Independent Leadership through Discipline (BUILD) program, for an enlightening exploration of his groundbreaking book, “Peace In the Hood: Working with Gang Members to End the Violence.” Dr. Basheer, renowned for his expertise in violence intermediation and hardcore gang intervention, provided invaluable insight into the challenges faced by communities affected by violence. Hosted in partnership with the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs, the event offered a deep dive into the motivations driving Dr. Basheer’s work and the effective strategies he employed in fostering positive change. It was a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge from a visionary leader in public safety and community empowerment.
