Officer Spotlight – Marla Ciuffetelli

Deputy Chief Marla Ciuffetelli is a Southern California native and a resident of the City of Los Angeles for nearly 30 years. In August of 1998, she fulfilled her dream and joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), where she has been privileged to serve our vibrant and diverse communities with the finest officers in the country. She completed her probation at Devonshire Area and then transferred to the Wilshire Area. She spent the next six (6) years working on a variety of assignments, including Patrol, the Bike Unit, and Narcotics Enforcement. Eventually, she promoted to a Police Officer III – Field Training Officer position.

In March of 2006, she became Detective and transferred to Southwest Area, where she investigated the Major Assault and Sexual Assault Crimes. In 2009, she transferred to the Missing Persons Unit with Detective Support and Vice Division.

Deputy Chief Ciuffetelli was promoted to Sergeant in 2012 and returned to Mid-City with an assignment at Olympic Area. During her time at Olympic, she worked as a Patrol Sergeant and later was designated as the OIC of the Parole Compliance Unit, Cyber Unit, and Crime Analysis Detail. She moved up to Detective III during her tour at Olympic and supervised the auto-related criminal investigations.

In April of 2017, Ciuffetelli became Lieutenant and did tours at Hollenbeck Area, as a Patrol Watch Commander, at Risk Management Legal Affairs Division, acting as OIC of the Employment Litigation Section, and later at the Discovery Section. Once becoming Captain I, she transferred to Van Nuys Patrol Division in 2022. In February 2023, she advanced to Captain III as the Van Nuys Area Commanding Officer.

In July of 2023, Deputy Chief Ciuffetelli was promoted to the rank of Commander and assigned to the Office of Constitutional Policing and Policy.

In February of 2025, Ciuffetelli was promoted to Deputy Chief and assigned to Operations-Valley Bureau. Operations-Valley Bureau is the largest command within the Department and includes seven area within the City – Devonshire, Foothill, Mission, North Hollywood, Topanga, Van Nuys and West Valley.

Deputy Chief Ciuffetelli received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from U.C. Santa Barbara and her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. She has attended a variety of training courses during her career with LAPD, such as participating in the Detective Training Unit Cadre. She enjoys mentoring and training younger officers.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, hiking, and cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Safe Communities Institute (SCI) at the USC Price School of Public Policy continues a more than 60-year tradition of research, interdisciplinary education, and collaboration to advance sustainable “whole-of-community” public safety strategies, policies, and programs. SCI takes a holistic approach to encouraging and informing public safety efforts through collaboration between all public safety disciplines and the communities they serve.
