The U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is offering $25 million in grants for two-year projects that pursue a comprehensive approach to school safety. As part of the COPS Office’s School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP), the funding provides up to 75% funding for the following school safety measures:
- Coordination with local law enforcement.
- Training for local law enforcement officers to prevent student violence against others and self.
- Placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures.
- Acquisition and installation of technology for expedited notification of local law enforcement during an emergency.
- Any other measure that, in the determination of the COPS Director, may provide significant improvement in security.
All states, units of local government and Native American tribes are eligible to apply. Grant recipients may use funds to contract with or make sub-awards to local education agencies, nonprofit organizations (excluding schools), local governments or tribal organizations.
